1. Welcome back!

2. New Mission Statement

The Asian Students’ Coalition is an affinity group that creates community for Asian and Asian American students at St. Ignatius College Preparatory. ASC provides a place to explore, share, and discuss the various Asian and Asian American heritages, cultures, and identities. ASC promotes ongoing education and dialogue about Asian American issues and seeks to support and empower students to contribute to an inclusive school community.

FORMER:

The Asian Students’ Coalition of Saint Ignatius is a club based on the Jesuit belief of creating community. ASC strives to bring awareness of Asian American culture and issues to the surrounding community and to enrich the lives of the student body, by providing a safe place for students to share Asian and Asian American heritage, culture, and identity.

3. Debrief Student Council Retreat / "Freedom"

• How it started: made a list of values and freedom was the one debated on, different thoughts:
• No need to create freedom, because everyone has freedom in the U.S. (reference to Constitution)
• Not everyone has freedom
• What do you think?
• Completely shut down the conversation after it got too intense, should have continued the conversation
• How can we best support you?
• ASC didn't really have an issue with the word freedom (observed), other leaders were debating
• What are your needs at this time?
• Be able to get together with other school leaders, specifically other affinity groups

4. First ASC General Meeting

• Publicity: SITV Announcement, email
• Date/Time/Place: Tuesday Sept. 12, Break, Place: TBD
• Topic: 
• General information/overview about ASC
• Sign-up list for a headcount on who's interested
• Use the SITV Announcement on Power of Words as a conversation starter

5. Affinity Groups Welcome which will take place after the Mass of the Holy Spirit, on Friday, September 8

• ASC Affinity: Safe place where those who identity as Asian, share similar experiences and can discuss these topics openly
• Canvas page...in progress

1. Ribbon Project (Emily)

• Since Thursday, gone to classrooms, put up posters, reaching out to friends
• Ribbons are in some classrooms & Magis office
• What can ASC do to keep conversation going?
• Any time future classes feel the need to use symbolism when they feel marginalized, use the Ribbon Project
• In the future, explain the meaning of the Ribbon Project more so people understand
• Started the project very late, so maybe start early in the future
• What can we do to continue to initiate change?
• Affinity groups should come together and mobilize
• Focus on those who have social influence: white allies
• Also take into account those who understand the project
• Target the lower class grades
• Introduce Affinity + Ribbon Project in the beginning of the year, with freshmen who are taking Ethnic Studies

• Pass out ribbons for/discuss the Ribbon Project
• Might be interpreted as a sign of protest, so need to make sure it is positive

• Activities - powerpoint presentation (cultural/educational aspect), Buzzfeed videos
